Recent figures from The Council of Europe Action Plan to Promote the Rights and Full Participation of People with Disabilities in Society (2006-2015) estimate that people with an intellectual disability (ID) are amongst the most disadvantaged in the educational system. There are limited tertiary education opportunities available for young adults with intellectual disabilities in Ireland and in Europe thus affecting employment prospects. There is an identified gap in provision for learners with intellectual disabilities leaving mainstream second-level school.
The Irish National Disability Strategy Implementation Plan 2013-16 highlighted the ability to travel independently as a key barrier to accessing educational opportunities. One of the goals of inclusive education is to bolster the education of all students by investing in sufficient support, curriculum and pedagogy that cultivates independence and inclusion. Let’s Go is a case study of the process of designing and developing an innovative eLearning web application support to enable educational inclusion for people with intellectual disability.
